In line with the analysis of this excellent article by the American Immigration Council (AIC), even if one is not required to register (as most ImLaw clients are already “registered”), it’s advisable that foreign nationals now carry evidence of their current immigration status with them, including but not limited to, an I-94 Arrival-Departure record (which may be accessed at https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov, contained as part of an I-797A approval notice from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), or issued as a standalone I-94 card with 11 digits/characters at top), I-551 Permanent Resident Card (“green card”), or an I-766 Employment Authorization Document (EAD). We would also conservatively recommend that U.S. citizens carry their U.S. passports, or, if naturalized citizens haven’t applied for and received their passports yet, their naturalization certificates.
For those without documentation, the Trump Registration Requirement is understandably causing great fear and anxiety. Affected individuals should consult a competent immigration attorney as soon as possible: AILA's Immigration Lawyer Search.
